Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Contrary to popular myth, acupuncture is less painful than a deep tissue massage.  Some of the points used cannot be felt at all.  Others, produce a slight tingling or itching sensation initially, which fades in a very short time.  As Cosmetic Acupuncture uses slightly different techniques to that of general acupuncture, most people report no pain at all.

How does it work?

The practitioner arrives at a diagnosis by using the pulses on the wrists, the appearance of the tongue, the general appearance of the patient and the dialogue with the patient.  Based on the diagnosis, the practitioner selects a number of acupuncture points that will address that patient’s health problems and work well together to create harmony and balance within the body.

How long does a treatment take?

First treatment involves a thorough history taking and can take up to an hour and a half.  Ongoing treatments generally last between forty and sixty minutes, but may stretch to an hour and a half depending on the health issues involved.

When do I start to feel better or different and how many treatments do I need?

A feeling of wellbeing can occur in the first ten minutes, or may take three to four treatments to achieve.  There are many factors which affect the length of the recovery period, such as age, general state of health, lifestyle choices, and the severity and chronicity of the presenting condition.  For best results six treatments at weekly intervals are recommended initially.  This is best followed by maintenance treatments at monthly to six weekly intervals, these are particularly important for chronic conditions.  Some people elect to have regular acupuncture to maintain health and wellbeing.
